Stiff Organs and Back Pain: What’s the Connection?

Why do some people continue to experience back pain despite trying various treatments and therapies? The answer is actually quite simple.

We often view the body as a collection of separate parts—arms, legs, back, abdomen, neck, head, shoulders—and treat each area individually. However, what is frequently overlooked is that the body functions as a single, interconnected system.

A restriction or loss of mobility in one area can have a direct impact on another, potentially triggering a chain reaction. The weakest link in this chain is often the first to develop symptoms. In most cases, this affects the lower back or neck, as these areas endure significant strain due to posture, movement patterns, and daily activities.

The Connection Between (Chronic) Back Pain and Abdominal Issues

For the body to function optimally, all its structures must move freely including the abdominal organs. These organs need to remain flexible and relaxed so they can move naturally with the body when we bend or twist.

Since organs like the stomach, intestines, uterus, and bladder are connected to the spine and pelvis through ligaments and membranes, they can have a direct impact on spinal mobility.

Scarring from abdominal surgery, stomach tension due to stress, digestive issues caused by food intolerances, or adhesions from conditions like endometriosis can create significant restrictions in the body. This can lead to tension in the back, causing stiffness and discomfort when moving.

How Can Osteopathy Help?

During an osteopathic assessment, I examine the entire body to identify and release areas of restriction and tension. When treating the abdomen, I use gentle manual techniques to relax and loosen the tissues. Afterward, I assess whether spinal mobility has improved.

In most cases, patients experience immediate relief from back pain, and movement feels smoother and more natural.

Would you like to book an Appointment?

During an initial consultation, which includes a detailed discussion and physical examination, I assess whether osteopathic treatment is suitable for you and how symptoms can effectively treated.

In most cases, a noticeable improvement can be expected after approximately three sessions.
